5 Winter Plumbing Tips you Can't Ignore!
If you don't want to find yourself asking, "It did what?" then you should start preparing your plumbing for the winter now.
Here are five plumbing tips you can't ignore unless you like spending lots of money on repairs.
1. Wrap Your Exterior Faucets
Now is the time to unhook, drain and store your garden hoses for the winter. Then you will need to cover those faucets with outdoor faucet covers (hose bibs). If you don't, they could freeze and burst.
2. Insulate Your Pipes
You should wrap all your un-insulated pipes with foam tubes or other types of foam. These are available in most hardware stores. This will help protect your pipes from freezing and breaking. You could also wrap your pipes with heat-tape for an extra layer of protection.
3. Monitor the Outside Temperatures
On nights when the outside temperatures are forecast to drop below freezing for more than three hours, you should open the cabinet doors that are along your exterior walls to allow the heat to get to those pipes. Then you should drip your faucets. A small steady drip will suffice. However, if the temperatures are significantly below freezing and will be for an extended period of time, it's best to allow your faucets to run with a steady stream of water about the size of pencil lead. This will keep the water from freezing and bursting your pipes.
4. Turn Off Your Sprinklers
If the temperatures are forecast to drop below freezing, you will need to turn off your sprinkler system. If you don't, and the water freezes on the road or sidewalk and someone gets hurt, you could be held liable. Or, you could just install a freeze sensor on your sprinkler system and that would take care of everything automatically.
5. Seal All Exterior Cracks
If you want to keep the cold air from coming in contact with your pipes in extreme weather, you should fill all the cracks in your home's exterior walls and foundation with a spray foam insulation. This will help prevent your pipes from freezing.
