6 Main Plumbing Maintenance Checks
Preventative actions with your plumbing can save you thousands of dollars. Small plumbing problems never go away; they just get worse. Half of the time you wouldn’t even know you have a small problem. We can tell you what to look for but sometimes you need an expert eye to inspect your plumbing to catch the small problems that can turn into big problems. When these plumbing problems are caught early, it is usually an easy fix for a cheap price. If left alone, problems range from a flooded basement to hundreds of dollars extra on your water or energy bill. Regular plumbing inspections from a professional plumber is a safe route to keep your home’s plumbing in check.
Here are our six main plumbing maintenance checks:
1. Water Heater Leaks
About a quarter of your home’s energy use comes from the water heater. If the water heater is leaking, your home’s efficiency is down the drain. Two problems occur from water heater leaks; you will not be getting as much hot water as you are used to and your energy bill will be higher because your water heater is producing hot water that is constantly leaking out. This is a major check on our plumbing inspections.
2. Damage to Plumbing Fixtures
Sinks, toilets, and showers all need to be checked during a plumbing inspection. Efficiency in use of water can be deterred when these fixtures are corroded, cracked, or even dented. Certain signs to look for include water on the floor, moisture buildup, and damp walls. Fixing plumbing fixtures early on will save you from molded floors and walls as well as money on your water bill.
3. Pipe Insulation
Pipes are the hardest to know if there are any problems for regular homeowners. If you do not have any pipe insulation, you are at risk for burst or frozen pipes. This is more intimidating during the winter months but you should have your pipes insulated before it gets cold. If you wait until December, your pipes might already be frozen which locks up all of your plumbing.
4. Slow Drainage
We check to see how well your drainage is performing. If we see a problem, we will do a drain cleaning. If you wait until there is a clog, it could form crack and a crack can cause a break. It will save you more money than you know if you have us perform a drain cleaning early on than wait for a broken pipe.
5. Water Treatment Systems
We will check how hard your water is during a plumbing inspection. When your water softener isn’t working properly, it can be hazardous to your family’s health. Water softeners filter out the minerals in your water that are not good for you to drink. Hard water can also damage your plumbing fixtures!
6. Toilet Flushing
We will test your toilet to make sure it is flushing correctly and make sure you are not wasting any water. If it is not sealed properly, it will run longer than it should after you flush. We make sure that it flushes the necessary amount of water.
