Let’s be honest, toilets are not sexy. Nevertheless, toilets are essential to our daily lives. If you have every traveled somewhere that does not have consistent access to clean water and good plumbing, you have probably realized how awesome (and insanely convenient) a good, working toilet can be. Your toilet is one appliance used every single day in your house. Everyone needs a good throne.

We’ve all seen how technology has rapidly developed over the last two decades. Most of us probably don’t think about toilet technology on a daily basis; however, toilet technology has also advanced during this time period. Specifically, and in due part to federal regulations, there have been developments in toilet flushing mechanisms, which allow modern toilets to use much less water per flush (the federal regulation is now 1.6 gallons per flush – opposed to roughly 4 gallons per flush twenty years ago). This development aligns with the eco-friendly trend which has grown in popularity.  Let’s take a look at what makes up a good toilet.

So what are the key characteristics of a “good” toilet?

Generally speaking, there are 5 categories to consider when looking for a new toilet:

  • Comfort – You and your family will inevitably spend a significant amount of time on the toilet. Like they say, “Everybody poops”. Therefore, you will want to make sure that your next toilet fits your comfort needs.

  • Durability – A toilet is a long-term investment. You will want to do your research and select a model that will last.

  • Eco-friendly – As mentioned above, federal regulations make modern toilets much more Eco-friendly in the past. There is no reason to waste good water, so make sure the next throne you purchase is alignment with today’s regulations/standards.

  • Rim cleaning – Nobody “enjoys” cleaning the toilet; however, most of the time, it can be a relatively painless task – unless the rim is dirty/stained. Different toilet models offer different options for rim cleaning, so do your homework if you don’t like having to break out the scrubber on a regular basis.

  • Seat – If you are going to make the long-term investment of a new toilet, take some time and consider what seat you want. Maybe you want a pad? Heck, maybe you are sick and tired of this cold Indiana winter and want to get a heated seat? There are plenty of options out there.

Outside of the basic considerations listed above, there are many other things to consider when purchasing a new toilet. Do you want a one piece or a two piece? What type of flushing system do you want need? With any long-term investment, it is important for you to do your research before you make a purchase.
